Jesus, the political threat, introduction

Introduction

Jesus got a great reputation as a miracle worker. It’s what got him noticed and what got him in trouble.

Whether we believe in miracles or not, the stories of the miracles of Jesus can tell us a great deal about him. They can tell us who the people of the time believed he was. They can even tell us who Jesus himself believed he was.
I grew up as a Muslim. In Islam, Jesus is considered to be one of God’s prophets...the model of kindness and love.

The Middle East made the early Christians men of action...they were political, they were provocative and they were subversive. Jesus challenged the political and religious authorities, and paid the ultimate price. The crucifixion was the climax to a series of critical events that began three years earlier.

The symbolism of the miracles reveals their true revolutionary nature. The Talmud (Jewish Holy book), Koran and major historians of the time admit that Jesus worked miracles. The miracles are at the heart of Jesus’ story. There has been a shift in scholarship away from whether the miracles happened, or not, to what is their meaning. Through archaeology we can reach back to understand the mindset of first century Jews
