The miracle of raising of the widows son back to life

This was one of three occasions when Jesus is said to have brought the dead back to life. Jesus arrives on the occasion of a funeral. The dead man was the only son of a widow.

Luke 7:14-15

And he came near, and put his hand on the stretcher where the dead man was: and those who were moving it came to a stop. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, Get up." And the dead man got up, and words came from his lips.

Maybe the young man had been in a coma or maybe it was a miracle, we can't know for sure. The point is that every one who saw it were left in no doubt. Jesus had raised the widow's son back to life.

Yet the extraordinary thing is that this triumph of life-over-death wasn't what really got the crowd going. The miracle was a sign. But the clue to its meaning was in another miracle from nearly a thousand years earlier.

The Old testament tells a story of a similar feat performed by Elijah, the greatest of Jewish prophets. He attacked the religious establishment for failing to live up to God’s commandments. The same characters, the same circumstances, the same outcome.
